Three types of restraining orders can be used to provide immediate assistance to victims of domestic violence. These are:
- Emergency Protective Order: Issue by law enforcement and good for only 5 days
- Temporary Restraining Order: Issued for cases not considered serious enough to be considered for criminal charges by the DA and is good for up to 21 days
- Permanent Restraining Order: Good for up to 5 years depending on the circumstances
