What should you not do during separation?

While filing for separation does not officially end your marriage, there are still some things that you should keep in mind. Here is a list of things not to do during your marriage separation:

  1. Do not move out of the marital home: If you move out of the home during a separation, you will not get equal time to spend with your children. It also reduces the chance of getting your personal belongings back should you proceed with a divorce.
  2. Do not make your separation public: Avoid telling people that you and your partner are separating. This is between you and your spouse and you don’t need people giving you unsolicited advice.
  3. Do not change the status quo: When you get separated, maintaining the status quo is important, especially if you have children. If you pay a certain bill, continue to pay it. If you usually pick the kids up from school on certain days, continue to do it. Keeping a routine will be good for everyone.
  4. Do not cut off communication: When you separate from your spouse it is still important to retain open communication. There can be some anger, blame, and hostility between spouses, but it is important to continue to communicate peacefully. This is especially important for a couple that has children or is hopeful to repair the marriage.
