The length that spousal support gets paid depends on several factors. If the marriage lasted 10 years or less, spousal support is typically ordered for half the length of the marriage. Longer marriages can often qualify for lifetime spousal support. However, spousal support may be terminated if a spouse dies, if the spouse receiving support dies, or if the spouse receiving support becomes self-supporting by getting a job.
