How do I file to become a registered domestic partner?

To become a registered domestic partner, you need to:

  • File a notarized Declaration of Domestic Partnership with the California Secretary of State
  • Share a common residence with your domestic partner
  • Not have an existing marriage or domestic partnership
  • Not be related by blood
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Both be a member of the same-sex, or for opposite-sex couples, at least 1 of you must be over 62 years of age
