To become a registered domestic partner, you need to:
- File a notarized Declaration of Domestic Partnership with the California Secretary of State
- Share a common residence with your domestic partner
- Not have an existing marriage or domestic partnership
- Not be related by blood
- Be at least 18 years old
- Both be a member of the same-sex, or for opposite-sex couples, at least 1 of you must be over 62 years of age
