If both parents are unfit or unable to have custody of a child, the court may appoint a new legal guardian. If available, this can be a family member like an aunt, uncle, or grandparent. Grandparents and aunts or uncles can also legally adopt the child, which legally terminates any rights and responsibilities that living parents have to the child.
