How to Technology-Proof Your Marriage

manAnyone who has a smart phone or computer knows that technology can be a two-edged sword. Sometimes it can really unite people, and other times it can practically tear them apart. Naturally, many people are trying to find the silver bullet to keep their marriages and other special interpersonal relationships afloat in the wake of the technological revolution, which continued to evolve today.

Here are some practical, tried-and-true tips to technology-proof your marriage.

Have tech-free zones

It’s easy to get addicted to endlessly scrolling through your facebook newsfeed, or constantly watching funny videos on youtube, but if you have mutually-agreed on rules in your home, you’ll find that technology use stays in balance more easily.

For example, perhaps you could agree with your partner on a no-phones-in-bed rule. That way, you’ll both be more available to each other in those precious moments before you drift off to sleep—for conversation, cuddling, and perhaps even intimacy.

These are special moments that many couples miss out on because they’re busy in their separate worlds on their phones. While that might not seem like a big deal in the moment, it can lead to a deep feeling of disconnection, and potentially, the big D—divorce.

Share Passwords

While it seems a bit counter-intuitive, open up to your spouse by sharing all social media and email passwords with him or her. Tell him or her the key to unlock your phone. While your spouse likely won’t check up on you regularly, it will give him or her a sense of security to know that you have nothing to hide. Build up trust by being completely open and honest about your social media activities.

Social media is now cited as evidence to prove infidelity in divorce court in a whopping 1/3 of all cases, and that number appears to be increasing. Many people begin to feel insecure about their relationship because of a spouse’s daily active involvement online, especially because there are many private ways to communicate with others. Lift the veil of distrust by giving your spouse unlimited access to your online communications, and you’ll find that you have more intrinsic trust built into your relationship.

Make a Tech-Budget

Money problems is one of the leading causes of divorce, and with new smart phones, tablets, and other tech gadgets coming on the market almost daily, spending lots of financial resources on “the next big thing” can place a serious strain on your marriage. While getting a new phone every once in awhile is wonderful, if you can afford it, it shouldn’t be a frequent expense. Try to keep your sense of perspective when you see commercials about new gadgets, and consider coming up with a monthly amount that will eventually go towards new purchases. You’ll find your wallet is a little heavier and your marriage much happier by resisting the impulse to run out and buy every thing your heart desires.
